Weekend travel can become messy for many travelers on the East Coast. Homeowners should early prepare for the travel this Christmas. The NWS Weather Prediction Center warned of powerful storms over the Gulf of Mexico and East Coast next week.

On the weekend and Monday, NWS monitors a powerful East Coast Storm that could impact from December 16 to 18, 2023. In this week's weather, people should watch out for flash flooding, snow, heavy rain, coastal flooding and damaging winds.

East Coast Holiday Travel in the US: Where Will Powerful Storm Unload?

Homeowners should check the weather for travel delays and cancellations.  Before the stormy outlook unleashes, residents should anticipate a dry spell on Friday. The dry outlook is expected in New York, Boston, Virginia Beach, Raleigh, Pittsburgh, Charleston and Wilmington. 

The forecast also warned of severe storms in the Southeast in the early week. Heavy snow is also possible in the Great Lakes and Central Appalachians.

Before the stormy outlook unleashes, residents should anticipate a dry spell on Friday. The dry outlook is expected in New York, Boston, Virginia Beach, Raleigh, Pittsburgh, Charleston and Wilmington.

The stormy outlook will be more noticeable on the weekend in parts of the East Coast. Residents should stay alert for flooding rain and flash flooding, especially in flood-prone areas.

Coastal concerns are also likely. Rip currents and damaging waves can bring significant weather risks, especially in the Chesapeake Bay Area to Southern New England.

On Sunday, the wetter outlook can unload in Virginia Beach, Raleigh, Charlotte and Columbia. 2 to 5 inches of rain can be likely. In the Carolinas, the forecast warned that it could experience the heaviest rain outlook.

In Boston, the advisory warned of a stormy outlook and coastal flooding over the South Coast and Southern New England. In Houston, the forecast said that isolated storms can be likely with locally heavy rainfall, including hazardous marine conditions and street flooding.

On Saturday, the rainfall outlook is likely in the following areas:

  • Portland
  • Boston
  • New York City
  • Washington
  • Raleigh
  • Wilmington
  • Charleston
  • Tampa
  • Miami

In Kansas City, residents can anticipate continued rainfall in the city. Next week, temperatures will become above normal in late December. Over the East Coast, challenging road conditions can occur in the following interstates: 20, 40, 64, 80, 81, 84 and 95.
