Woman in Coma Fighting For Life After Dangerous Encounter With Crocodile in Mexico

Sister hit crocodile in the head after it attacked in a lagoon where they had been swimming.
A British woman is in a serious coma in Mexico after she was mauled by a crocodile in a lagoon where she and her twin sister was swimming in the company of a tour guide.

The Encounter

28-year-old Melissa and Georgia Laurie, from Berkshire, had been swimming in the lagoon, around 10 miles from Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, on the south-east coast of the country, when Melissa was mauled by the crocodile. Her life was saved by her sister, who found her floating with her face downwards, she fought off the crocodile as she made effort to take her sister back to their boat.

The sisters are in the hospital recovering, with Georgia hurting by the injuries in her hands and Melissa placed in a coma to avoid infection to her injuries. The twins' father, Sean Laurie, said it was thanks to the experience Georgia had as a diver.

That was the reason she was able to save her sister. Sean Laurie said: "They were swimming after dark in the bioluminescent waters when Georgia heard the cry of Melissa, she had dived to try finding her sister before seeing her on the surface."But when she was taking her back to the boat the crocodile attacked again," Sean Laurie said. "Georgia had to fight off the crocodile. She kept on punching it in the head."

The Twin Hospitalized

Hana, 33, the sister to the twin, told the PA Media news agency the family were very proud of Georgia, who fought the crocodile off three times. Hana said Georgia's OK, she's tired and very stressed. Hana said she thinks Georgia is really scared but she is awake and has got some injuries on her hands.

Melissa's still in a coma that is medically-induced. The sisters had been on a break from volunteer work with Mexico's animals when they decided to take the trip to the lagoon, according to PA Media. Hana said the family were in surprised when they discovered what had happened because the event was "so uncommon, and so rare."

The Tour Guide 

A tour guide the twins had arranged for through their hostel had been revealed to be unregistered and known for taking tourists to risky locations for swimming, Hana said.

He's gone to where the crocodiles inhabit and not the location where all authorized certified sanctioned tours take place, he has been locally called out before the incident, apparently, but that wasn't for my sisters to be aware of. They found out about the information through their hospital. Hanna said

The family were trying to make a decision whether they could go to Mexico, which is ranked amber for risk of coronavirus by the UK government.
