A newborn boy is in stable condition after being rescued from a sewage pipe in China’s Zhejiang province over the weekend.

Emergency crews were called to an apartment block in the city of Jinhua on Saturday afternoon after residents alerted authorities to the sound of a crying baby, according to The Independent.

The firefighters reported that the 2-day old baby, simply known as Baby No. 59, was lodged headfirst in a pipe 4 inches in diameter.

In all, the rescue took 2 hours as the responders first had to saw the L-shaped pipe from the wall and then carefully remove the pipe in order to free the child.

According to the Agence France-Presse, the unmarried woman reportedly concealed her pregnancy and that the baby fell into the toilet when she expectantly gave birth.

Furthermore, the AFP reported that the mother was on the scene during the rescue, openly admitting that it was her son.

News of the event has since led to an outpouring of support from locals who arrived at the hospital after the rescue with diapers, baby clothes and powdered milk, according to New York Daily News. In fact, some have even offered to adopt the baby, though a doctor at the hospital said the boy will likely be handed over to social services, according to Zhejiang News.

News of the event as well as video footage of it have led to a wave out outrage on the web by Chinese citizens.

“Since I was young, I’ve seen deserted babies on trash heaps,” said Weixian one user of Sina Weibo, China’s microblogging site. “It seems that in Chinese people’s eyes, throwing a baby away is not an evil thing.”
