A strong cold front bringing the coolest wave of air since May fill envelop the northeastern United States this week.

This is according to AccuWeather meteorologists who projected the coolest air will arrive just in time for the official start of the fall season, which will kickstart at 9:03 p.m. EDT (local time) on Thursday, September 22.

The forecast showed below-average temperatures are possible in the coming days.

Multiple cities, including New York City, will experience the plummeting of temperatures for the first time in many months, which were marked by a rollercoaster of adverse weather.

Since the summer season in June, the Northeast US experienced a series of recurring severe weather like thunderstorms, torrential rain, and heat waves.

The incoming front will serve as relief from the region's previous weather hazards.

The cold weather is expected to occur later this week and during the upcoming weekend.

Fall Equinox

The transition from summer into fall means that the Sun's direct sunlight will pass through the Equator and will continue to navigate southward until mid-December.

During this period, temperatures are translated as a warm weather, which is neither too hot or too cold in a daily average.

The autumn season is also a time for hibernating animals to prepare storage of food before their months-long nap during the winter season.

The fall equinox marks such transition on Thursday, which widely referred to as the September Equinox or Autumnal Equinox.

During this season, the Sun will prepare its descent below the horizon of the North Pole for six months.

It will then rise and be up for six months at the South Pole, according to University of Illinois.

US Weather Forecast

In other forecasts, the National Weather Service (NWS) said excessive rain could lead to flooding in the Four Corners region by Thursday evening, specifically across southwestern Colorado, northeast Arizona, southeast Utah, and northwest New Mexico.

In addition, the NWS expected thunderstorms, with large hail and damaging winds, could become severe near the Great Lakes and Great Basin.

In spite of the relatively calm weather during autumn, some parts of the US are susceptible to dangerous and disruptive storms.

In particular, this is the case since the Atlantic hurricane season and the Pacific hurricane season is still ongoing until November 30.

The formation of named storms and hurricane over the Pacific and Atlantic oceans could make an initial impact to the country's coastline communities.
