A false fall season will show a glimpse of cooler temperatures for some parts of the US, but will eventually fuel temperatures to skyrocket in the coming days, according to US meteorologists warn. As the summer season is about to end, forecast indicates that the country will experience further above-average temperatures, especially in the Central US.

CNN Meteorologist Jennifer Gray on Monday, September 12, reported that fall-like temperatures are within reach but it will not be for everyone. This is because the autumn weather will only be short-lived for only some parts of the country.

Gray calls it as a "false fall" season, citing that cooler temperatures will not come since temperatures could continue to soar this week, especially for the Rockies and Great Plains.

Based on the meteorologist's forecast, it will seem there will be an extended summer season this year, regardless of the onset of the fall equinox on September 22.

Autumn Season Summary

The meteorological autumn season spans from September to November each year. During this period, above normal temperatures and precipitation are expected, as shown in previous years, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

In its autumn season summary report, the NWS took the state of Illinois as a sample of weather conditions during the period, with fall temperatures averaging in the 40s and with reported moderate chances of rainfall.

US Weather Forecast

Prior to the official arrival of the fall season, the US is still experiencing the remnants of the summer, marked by hot temperatures, recurring heat waves, and thunderstorms. In addition, heavy rainfall due to a tropical moisture had also affected the southern half of the US, including the Southwest, Deep South, and Southeast regions.

For the meantime, the Weather Prediction Center (WPC) of the NWS on Tuesday has issued a new short-range US weather forecast. It is valid until Thursday, September 15.

The weather outlook includes a risk of excessive rainfall in south-central and eastern Nevada, as well as to southwestern Utah and northwestern Arizona. This is due to a reported shortwave energy that will support the moisture moving into the Southwest, Great Basin, and Intermountain West in the coming days.

Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms

The WPC also predicts a risk of severe thunderstorm and showers in the Northeast due to a surface front moving into the region. Severe storms are possible in some areas, including those from eastern New York to the western New England.

The occurrence of isolated hail and brief tornado is also possible during afternoon and evening hours, the weather authorities assert.

Third Hottest Summer on Record

Furthermore, the US weather agency also mentioned the warming of the Great Plains and the cooling down of the Western US, which is still engulfed by several dozens of wildfires, including in the states of California, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

On September 9, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) stated the US just underwent the "third hottest meteorological summer on record." In August, the country reportedly experienced above-average temperatures, as well as extreme rainfall events.

Based on the latest reports, the recent weather events cloud over a potentially full-blown fall season, which is typically colder and more windier on a regular basis.
