Founded by Leonardo DiCaprio in the early 2000s, Appian Way Productions has certainly come a long way. After the massive success of The Wolf of Wall Street and winning critical Oscar acclaim with The Revenant, they have gradually built another reputation for documentaries highly focused on sustainability.

If you have ever watched Cowspiracy on Netflix, Appian Way was one of the companies behind it as well as other projects like The Ivory Game and Virunga.

But in the months following Earth Day 2021, they have also been involved in another wildlife series that is set to release in cooperation with YouTube Originals.

Its working title is Staying Wild and will take viewers to some of the most vulnerable ecosystems around the world with host Mark Vins. The show is a joint-project with Madica Productions and Vins' own wildlife YouTube channel Brave Wilderness.

Staying Wild is one of the first shows ordered by Google as part of its larger climate change initiative and are scheduled to be released sometime in October this year.

Leonardo DiCaprio's climate change commitment

Climate change has been a primary focus of DiCaprio for quite some time. After finally winning his first ever Oscar for his work in The Revenant, he wasted no time using his speech to talk about global warming and urge people to take more action in response to the declining state of the planet.

There was no shortage of reports detailing the intense lengths he went through to perfectly execute his role. However, not even that could compare to how he personally witnessed the effects of climate change on his work. It became clear to him that it was happening and humanity cannot waste anymore time reversing this dangerous trend.

Google's own sustainability plans against climate change

The upcoming YouTube Originals are part of Google's own climate action initiative. Asides from ordering content aimed towards creating awareness about sustainability, it has also been working steadily towards reducing its own carbon footprint.

As one of the biggest, leading tech companies in the world, much of Google's presence resides in massive data centers as much as its own headquarters and offices. However, it is very clear that all of these run heavily on power that has not entirely been considered sustainable or clean.

For the most part, the company has managed to stay carbon neutral for quite some time but admits that it can still do a lot better. That is why it claimed to have made some of the biggest purchases of renewable energy in the past decade.

It has even pledged to develop some of its own technology to better utilize renewable energy more efficiently, as well as expanding operations to places where policies work to support carbon-free energy.

In any case, it goes to show that the issue of global warming has really done a lot bringing the massive industries of both big entertainment and big tech together for one cause.
