Corn Mazes: A Safe Outdoor Activity This Time of Year

The autumn season is officially here, with all the fun and exciting outdoor activities that come with it, such as visiting and playing in corn mazes. Each family is getting geared up to enjoy activities during their free time on weekends.

So many activities are available. These include hayrides, apple picking, hiking, pumpkin picking, and more. Because the pandemic is still with us, it is only normal to ask if it is safe to go to corn mazes at this time.

The outdoors can be a safe place to be in, as long as we take the necessary precautions. 

Corn mazes can be fun and safe for families that long to break free from being cramped up inside their homes.

Experts Weigh In On the Issue.

Fortunately, experts generally agree. According to Dr. Forrest Talley, a pediatric psychologist, it now seems safe for children to stay out and have a good time in a corn maze.

She explains that this is because the transmission of the coronavirus disease is more likely to happen when the children are stuck indoors, especially with prolonged and constant exposure to infected people. When close to COVID-19 positive individuals, all it takes is a few seconds to get infected. 

According to Vikram Tarugu, MD, corn mazes are an excellent opportunity for children to have an educational time. He also agrees that these places are safe, as long as the crowded hayride is avoided.

Taking Precautionary Measures

It is always a good idea to be careful. Planning an outdoor activity, pandemic, or not should have safety as part of the agenda and preparations. 

If you want to take your kids out to a corn maze, and for that matter, any outdoor venue or activity such as pumpkin picking, you should take the necessary safety measures. 

According to Dr. Talley, you should advise your children to refrain from hugging other children inside the maze. Of course, you should always tell them to enjoy their time. 

Talley says that being a role model for confidence will help kids realize that life involves risks, and these risks must be realistically assessed, from which actions and behavior should spring. Following this, the trust will naturally come to them. 

He reminds parents to maintain basic hygiene at all times, making sure that children regularly wash their hands and cover their mouths as they sneeze or cough. Because you will likely run into other individuals in the corn maze, it is also a good idea to wear masks.

Of course, if there are family members who are ill or have any disease symptoms, they must stay at home.

Various Outdoor Activities

Going to a corn maze is not the only outdoor option for the family this fall. Talley reiterates that any outdoor activity must be encouraged. He advises parents to go ahead and plan to go to pumpkin picking, apple picking, park visits, and other venues. 

He says that as long as hygiene and caution are observed, and the children do not hang around too much with other kids, everything should be alright. Choosing corn mazes that impose social distancing is one of the best outdoor activities you can select this autumn.
