Drying of Water Well in Central Valley Can Affect Communities' Drinking Water in California, Research Warns

Without urgent mitigation and protection efforts, the domestic wells in California could significantly decline before the law becomes effective in 2040.

In the October 2022 report, Central Valley farmers suffered from the drying up of domestic wells in California, worsened by drought conditions and depleted water reservoirs.

The 2022 recorded over 1,200 dried wells.

Researchers raised concerns about the potential effect on 1000 public supply wells and 9000 domestic wells.

The study results were published in the Scientific Reports journal.

The report highlighted that the depletion or decline of groundwater wells can impact food security in California and the US. As a result, studying the potential factors can protect wells from drying up.

Furthermore, the researchers observed 60 groundwater sustainability plans (GSPs).

The report showed that about 5,000 domestic wells are at risk of drying up, while the 4,000 household wells can become partially affected.

Damaging pumping of groundwaters

The sustainable use of water and management can help mitigate the problem of domestic wells in California, addressing the potential impact on the drinking water.

Meanwhile, Americans can also contribute to the water security in California. People should responsibly use the water as needed.

Homeowners can save water by turning off tap water and sprinklers at home or garden. They should also check for possible leaks or drips.
