Experts discovered the new tallest tree in Asia that is located in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region. Based on recent reports, the tree is a Himalayan Cypress that reached 102.3 meters.

Before discovering the Himalayan Cypress in China, the Menara or yellow Meranti held the record.

According to the Monumental Trees, the Yellow Meranti or the Shorea Faguentiana measured 100.8 meters in Malaysia.

In the article published in the University of Oxford, experts underwent dimensional exploration to study the said tree. The term Menara means Towers.

Menara is said to weigh about 81,500, which is the size of a Boeing 737-800.

Based on the report, the tree was first discovered in 2018 using the Light Detection and Ranging Survey (LiDAR).

The new record for the tallest tree in Asia surpassed the Menara, which also set an important milestone or discovery for researchers.

According to the report published in Phys.org, the Himalayan or Tibetan cypress or Cupressus torulosa is in Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon in China's Xizang Autonomous Region.

Meanwhile, the report in Smithsonian Magazine explained that the rare Himalayan cypress could compete with the second-tallest tree in the world.

The tree was uncovered in Nyingchi City, an essential place for conservation and rich ecosystems.

Furthermore, the researchers also discovered giant trees in the area. The report said some trees measure 85 meters, while 25 measure more than 90 meters.

In the Independent UK report, the areas of giant trees are considered unique in soil and climate, allowing them to grow gigantic.

How the tallest tree was discovered

The researchers looked into the tallest trees to confirm their existence. In May this year, they flew a drone with a lidar sensor that later on found the giant Himalayan cypresses.

Immediately, the researchers developed 3D point cloud models that showed the Himalayan cypresses. 

Moreover, the report noted the importance of more studies and investigations that could unlock new taller trees in the protected area.

Part of the study is to monitor the Himalayan cypresses in the area.
