The origin story of the 'Super-Pets' in the latest comic book movie "DC League of Super-Pets" takes place at an actual animal shelter. The new animated film's writer and director, Jared Stern, told CNET that working at an animal shelter inspired him for the project.

Latest DC Project

The new animated movie DC League of Super-Pets follows Superman's dog Krypto as he steps up to aid the Man of Steel and the rest of the Justice League when they are abducted. Krypto possesses abilities similar to those of his guardian.

Krypto enlists the aid of homeless animals who, due to an accident, acquire abilities of their own. Voice actors John Krasinski, Dwayne Johnson, Vanessa Bayer, Kate McKinnon, Diego Luna, and Keanu Reeves also contribute to the movie, which hits cinemas this Friday.

While most of us are hooked by star power and an exciting narrative, DC League of Super-Pets also has a heartwarming genesis story.

The movie's writer, director, and producer, Jared Stern, said he received the concept for the movie while working with his wife at an animal shelter when they were still dating. A room with lovely kittens was in the front of the shelter. However, there was a rear room at the rescue where all the "lifers" that would probably never be adopted were kept.

In an interview with CNET's I'm such an Obsessed podcast, Stern said, "Some of them are older. Some of them were dealing with various issues, and I thought, 'Oh, it's going to be tougher for these to get adopted.' And I have no idea why, but I thought, 'What if they got superpowers?' And maybe because they seemed so powerless, I wanted them to be powerful. "That was the germ of the concept from that day at the animal shelter, and then thinking about the different DC Super-Pets and combining it all."

The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie were co-written by Stern, who also produced the Netflix animated series Green Eggs & Ham. Stern also got access to other Warner Bros. superheroes from DC.

In the comic books, Superman has a dog named Krypto that shares all his superhuman abilities, including flight and heat vision. However, other heroic pets are also featured in DC comics, such as Ace the Bat-Hound, whose voice is provided by Kevin Hart in the animated series DC League of Super-Pets. Stern has a turtle as one of his favorites.

Animal Shelters

Numerous healthy, well-behaved animals are waiting for homes at animal shelters and rescue organizations. When animals arrive, the majority of shelters evaluate and immunize them. Before adoption, many shelters also perform spaying or neutering. In addition to offering medical attention, more and more animal shelters and rescue organizations conduct temperament and behavior assessments to match dogs with potential owners.

Animals are frequently thought to enter shelters due to maltreatment or poor behavior. In reality, the majority of animals in shelters are there for "human reasons": among the most frequent causes of pet homelessness are divorce, relocating, a lack of time, and financial restraints. Pets who are adopted are just as devoted, loving, and smart as those that are bought.

Saving Pets

Depending on the estimate, three to four million dogs and cats are put to death ("euthanized") annually in the United States because not enough people spay or neuter their existing pets, not enough people adopt new pets, and too many individuals give their pets up. Because shelters have a limited amount of room, employees must sometimes decide to put healthy animals to sleep if they aren't adopted within a particular period of time.

If more people adopt pets rather than buy them, the number of animals put to death may drastically decrease. Adopting from an animal shelter or rescue organization will contribute to the lives of two animals: the pet you choose and a stray that can be saved thanks to the space you provide.
