Learn how to plan before this year's hurricane season comes. Hurricanes and other great storms are some of the most widespread natural disasters and constitute a serious danger to anyone on their way.

There is an average of around 12 named storms every year, between tropical storms and hurricanes. And sadly, we can't project when they'll strike.

Make an Emergency Plan

One of the most crucial steps to preparing for hurricane season is making an emergency plan for your family, as well as your evacuation route.

Firstly, you have to know how your family will communicate during the time of the hurricane ahead of time and how you'll get your emergency notification. Know where you'll stay in place, but also the route you'll take for evacuation if the need arises.

Special measures needed to care for pets, children, or family members with mobility issues should be included in your plan. Also, create a plan for any household members who need special medical equipment or medication.

Prior to the hurricane season, make sure every family member understands the plan, including the children.

Make Sure Your Home is Secured

As hurricane season comes closer, adopt steps to protect your property against future hurricanes and high winds. Some steps you can take include: Trimming of trees to get rid of weak branches; installation of hurricane-proof doors; installation of storm shutters to windows; changing exterior glass to tempered glass; creating a plan for potted plants, outdoor furniture, and recreational toys.

Get an Emergency Kit Ready

When hurricane is approaching the last thing you want to do is rush all over the place to find the things you may need for the coming days. Rather, have an emergency kit on standby that you can turn to. Things in your emergency kit can include: bottled water; nonperishable food; flashlights; some extra batteries; portable radio; cash; first-aid supplies; pet food; prescription medication.

Check Your Insurance Policies

Before each year's hurricane season is the best time to cross-check your insurance policies and make sure you're fully covered if any incident arises.

First, you should make sure that your current coverage is sufficient to rebuild your home and get all of your personal property in case of personal loss. You should also ensure you have the types of coverages specially required for hurricanes: windstorm insurance and flood insurance.

Keep Essential Documents in a Safe Place

If you're storing essential documents in your home in paper form, it's time to discover a new method. First, ensure that every crucial document is in a fireproof and waterproof safe in your home.
