TE connectivity, a leading company in connectivity and sensors, has produced a new Customizable Trunk Solution (CTS) for use in solar farms. This innovation offers the benefits of reduced cost and design flexibility in photovoltaic connections. CTS is designed to help in the elimination of combiner boxes in DC grid systems and enable plug-n-play flexibility from the string harness to the inverter for most site conditions. Users of Customizable Trunk Solutions benefit from a reduction in total labor, maintenance and operational costs.

Key Products in CTS:

CTS has three key components, namely: Gel Solar Insulation Piercing Connectors (GS-IPC), Solar Fuse Harness (SFH) and Disconnect Boxes.

Gel Solar Insulation Piercing Connectors (GS- IPC)

With this new connector, two critical technologies are combined: the insulation Piercing Technology (for a fast and easy connection without the need for insulation cutback) and the Powergel formulation to insulate, seal and protect for increased reliability. The GS-IPC provides high-quality sealing, as well as protection and insulation for easy, safe and fast cable connections for PV cables within the range of #10 AWG to 500 Kcmil. It also allows transition between sizes and materials, such as copper and aluminum.

Solar Fuse Harnesses (FSH)-Over-molded assemblies

This is a reliable fuse harness solution that can work in several configurations including tapping, in-line over-molded fuses, string jumpers and whips.

Disconnect Boxes

These boxes are constructed of fiberglass or steel with up to 400 amps load break. The boxes also have a surge and common ground capability with shear bolt connectors to promote simple and easy installations.

According to TE's Product Manager Daniel Ribeiro, "The increasing use of solar as a viable and competitive source of alternative energy prompted the development of a new solar trunk bus solution that will improve efficiency and reliability in circuits and offer ease of installation and cost reductions by combining three parts in one.
