Usually, the way in which we educate ourselves or our children is with schooling. A law that has been passed In most countries is that it's a legal requirement to attend school up until a certain age. But that has been more recent. If you're looking for something away from languages then there are apps like Khan academy that concentrate on subjects like maths, science physics, economics, etc. The app has over 10000 videos that are available completely for free and there's even a children's version of it.
