Earthquake Safety: How Can People Stay Safe

Earthquakes can bring life-threatening situations. Every second matters when a quake strikes. It can cause tsunamis, aftershocks, fires, landslides and mudslides. As a result, early preparedness is important to prevent damage and injuries.

While quakes are hard to predict, preparedness is helpful to stay safe. Here are essential earthquake reminders for people.

Ensure your home is safe.

Home improvements and repairs will ensure it is safe from earthquakes. If you live near quake-prone areas, homeowners should observe the building standards in their cities.

Securing fragile materials and cabinets is also recommended to avoid falling during earthquakes.

Always practice the Drop, Cover and Hold On.

Homeowners should prepare disaster plans during earthquakes or aftershocks. Practicing the Drop, Cover and Hold on will keep people safer.

When an earthquake occurs, people should protect or cover their heads. Immediately drop and look for a secure area. You can crawl under a table or desk and hold on.

Stay away from windows, cabinets or any fragile materials that could likely fall.

Keeping earthquake emergency kits

Earthquake emergency kits are recommended. Strong quakes can cause inaccessible road conditions and devastating damage. The kits will be helpful when you are being evacuated or stuck inside your home.

What you should do after the quakes

After an earthquake, people should anticipate aftershocks. It is best to wait until the shaking stops before you move outside. Be careful with damaged homes and falling debris.
