Two Alligators Kill a Florida Woman After Falling Into Pond at a Golf Course

An alligator attack led to the death of a Florida woman at a golf course pond last week. Local authorities confirm two alligators were involved in the assault. The duo gators snatched the woman who was struggling to stay above the surface after falling into the waters in the evening hours of Friday, July 15.

The incident took place at around 8:00 p.m. at the Boca Royal Golf and Country Club, which is also near her home in Englewood area, a part of both Charlotte County and Sarasota County. Authorities reported the details of the incident, where it was seen that the two gators were seen grabbing the struggling woman.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office investigating the incident said that the identity of the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was not released as of Sunday, July 17, as cited by The Macon Telegraph newspaper.

The Boca Royale Golf and Country Club is situated around 30 miles south of Sarasota. The golf course is also enclosed in a 1,000-acre gated community.

Duo Alligators Removed

Meanwhile, wildlife officials removed the two alligators from the gold course pond; with the first reptile having a size of 8 feet, 10 inches and the second to be 7 feet and 7 inches, according to WPTV news.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) told ABC News they are not planning to remove additional alligators from the pond.

In the past, the aftermath of an alligator or other wild animal attack involved the removal or killing of the animal perpetrator.

The wildlife officials were also involved in the removal of approximately 250 alligators from Disney properties within a span of five years after a two-year-old boy was killed at the Gran Floridian Resort and Spa in 2016.

Florida Alligator Attacks

In the past decade, the FWC recorded multiple alligator bites across Florida. These attacks include one fatality in 2019 and related deaths in 2018, 2016, and 2015.

In 2019, a 10-foot alligator killed Jardan Battle, 31, when he swam across a retention pond to evade a police arrest in Fort Myers, Lee County.

In 2018, a 12-foot alligator killed Shizuka Matzuki, 47, while walking her dogs along the edge of an unnamed lake at Silver Lakes Rotary Nature Park in Davie, Broward County.

In 2016, two alligators measuring between 7 to 8 feet in length killed Lane Graves, 2, who was playing along the shore of Seven Seas Lagoon in Orange County.

In 2015, a 12-foot alligator killed James Okkerse, 61, while he was snorkeling in Blue Spring Run in Orange City, Volusia County.

The FWC reminds that alligators seldomly bite people and fatal attacks are rare. However, the US wildlife agency urged people to watch out for alligators when one finds himself or herself in or near fresh water or brackish water.

Closed supervision is emphasized for children and pets, the agency adds.

Despite the rarity of fatal attacks, multiple deaths related to alligator bites have been reported not only in Florida but also in other parts of the United States.
