One incredibly intense winter storm covered some of the United States' southern parts in a thick blanket of frost. It reached Alabama and Tennesse on Monday after raging across Texas, Louisiana, and Mississipi. Many schools and government establishments in the region were forced to close and once again advised to stay safe at their homes' comforts.

According to the National Weather Service in Houston, up to 6 inches or 15 centimeters of snow fell and covered many areas of Southern Texas. The storm managed to make the road slippery and even caused some minor power outages in the area.

The storm went further south into Louisiana and Mississipi at night, prompting the Louisiana state police to release an online memo warning the citizens to go inside and stay off the roads if possible.

The next day, the storm has lessened its initial intensity leaving a light dusting on grassy and higher areas across some areas in Alabama and Tennessee.

About 4 inches (10 centimeters) thick of snowfall were expected for many areas. Because of the effects of the intense weather conditions, the state government offices were closed for 29 parishes on Monday the 11th.

Tens and thousands of Louisiana and Texas power consumers were left without electricity because of the power outage. Fortunately, utility repair personnel were immediately deployed to resolve the situation.

Many schools in Mississipi and Arkansas decided to close school or delay school for the day, while others carried on with online learning and video conferences.

The places further south were more fortunate as the winter storm weakened until it dissipated before it reached their areas. However, they were still able to get their fair share of snow, rain, or sleet.

Intense weather precipitation events during the winter season are winter storms. During these times, there would be heavier snow, rain, snowstorm, or even hales. Amounts that are more than usual during the season.

Despite the name, winter storms are not exclusive during winter seasons alone; there are also recorded occurrence during late autumn and early spring, especially during the significantly colder days of each season.

These are particularly dangerous because aside from the usual harms that a regular storm brings, it also has the risks of a slippier frozen ground, making the road more dangerous, and the possible creation of hales or frozen rain. These are hazardous weather shards created by the freezing of water during a downpour.

Winter Storm Preparedness

It won't do anyone harm to be a little more careful and prepared during the winter season than usual. The following are great ways to prepare for possible snowstorms or blizzards:

  • Stocking up on food and rations;
  • Have spare utility supplies in case of emergency;
  • Stock up on de-icing products and heavy-duty anti-snow types of equipment;
  • Have winter tires;
  • Prepare for possible power outages;
  • Prepare an emergency kit; and
  • Plan winter route in case of necessary travels.

During these times, it would be best to stay inside one's home's safety rather than risk getting in a road accident.
