The oceans of the earth are a collection of diverse and vast ecosystems that stays extensively a mystery to this day. Indeed, only about five percent of the seas in the world have been toured, as stated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. And yet, mankind has nevertheless revealed an astonishing array of sea creatures that are as strange as they are beautiful.

The Shapeless Sea Animal Called the Blobfish

The blobfish has often been enthroned as the "world's ugliest fish," which is truly an impressive attainment given the number of weird and scary ocean animals found in the sea.

More gelatinous than the pudding of grandma, the jiggly blobfish (Psychrolutes microporos), has successfully enchanted the internet for its shapeless form.

Given the highest depths to which experts must go to discover the tiny yet scary hatchet fish, much is unknown about them. The strange sea animals got their name from their razor-thin bodies, which look like the blade of a hatchet.

These fish can generally be discovered almost 200 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean. There are about 40 known species of hatchetfish that live in the ocean with their sizes ranging between less than two inches to five inches long.

The Fangtooth Fish Looks Like Something Out of Your Bad Dreams

At a glance, the fangtooth fish (Anoplogaster cornuta) with its mouthy face resembles an underwater predator that is threatening. But despite its menacing appearance, the fangtooth is really quite a passive sea animal. Indeed, the fangtooth may look very harmful, but its bad eyesight makes it a gentle predator.

These frightening ocean animal, also called ogrefish, stay as far as 16,400 feet beneath the sea, which is approximately the length of 55 American football fields. 

The Surprisingly Terrifying Sea Cucumber

In spite of their name, sea cucumbers are truly animals. There are approximately 1,250 species of sea cucumber that live in the ocean. These sea creatures are marine invertebrates and they belong to the Echinodermata phylum, which consists of other seabed inhabitants like sand dollars, sea stars, and sea urchins,

But don't allow their lifeless looks decieve you. These rare animals have some abilities that make them much more consequential to the ocean than one would believe just by staring at them.

Frightening Ocean Animals From the Deep: the Goblin Shark

The goblin shark, also known as Mitsukurina owstoni, is among the most bizarre sea animals.

Unfortunately overshadowed in pop culture by its more terrifying cousins, the goblin shark heads a relatively weird existence at more than 4,000 feet beneath the ocean surface. They are considered living fossils by scientists and are considered to be the only remaining survivor of a 125 million-year-old family of sharks.
