Trees are known for fighting climate change and even natural disasters such as flooding. In addition, these towering plants also serve as barrier that prevent the spread of wildfires. However, widespread tree destruction or deforestation caused by human activities have become prevalent over the past several decades. It is also during this period when tree planting initiatives emerged, to restore nature's iconic evergreen.

Planting tree seeds can be challenging due to the risk posed by natural and anthropogenic factors, which can hinder the saplings from growing into maturity. For instance, human-induced destruction of young trees is a major threat to forest areas and even those within communities. One such case occurred in a UK town last year based on a post that went viral on Reddit that claimed vandalized destroyed newly planted seeds at a community park.

The newly planted trees at a local park in the UK town of Rotherham were uprooted halfway up its trunks, according to a Reddit post last year but was only reported on Monday, March 4. The post shows a photo uploaded by a Rotherham resident with a Redditor name of "Leoneth333" who was aggravated by the incident. The uploader described the vandals as "some reprobates have broken all the new planted trees in our local park."

The redditor added in the comments that young trees towering at 10 to 12 feet tall were planted in a "park with cameras." Furthermore, the UK resident also mentioned in the comment section that punishment for the said vandalism act is loose in the country. However, the case is different when it comes to larger, more older trees. In September 2023, a boy was arrested in Northumberland, England after cutting down the famous Sycamore Gap tree.

Why are Trees Important?

Science has thought us that trees are important to the environment mainly because they provide Earth with oxygen, conserve water, improve air quality, and act as shelter or natural habitats for wildlife. Trees are also a good source of products and furniture made out of wood. According to the non-profit organization The Nature Conservancy, below are some of the ways trees benefit all of us:

  •  Trees absorb greenhouse gases that cause climate change.
  •  Trees improve the mental and physical health of humans.
  •  Trees purify the air to allow living organisms breathe more easily.
  •  Trees regulate and cool down temperatures.
  •  Trees filter water and make it cleaner for us to drink

Despite the significance of trees to the environment and ecosystems, these plants have decreased in numbers in some regions of the world in the past. However, tree planting initiatives have made progress in recent decades. According to a 2018 report by the World Economic Forum, Earth has more trees now than it had 35 years ago, thanks to an increase in man-made plantations and tree planting programs.
