Effects in Bermuda

The National Hurricane Center and Central Pacific Hurricane Center said that at 800 PM AST (0000 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Philippe was spotted near latitude 23.1 North, longitude 66.0 West.

Philippe is tracking the direction toward the north near 12 mph (19 km/h). This general motion having an increase in forward speed is expected through Saturday.

Meanwhile, on the forecast track, the center of Philippe is seen to pass near Bermuda on Friday, and it will approach eastern New England and Atlantic Canada on Saturday.

Philippe is packing maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts.

Weather experts said that a little change in strength has been forecasted during the next day or so.

They noted that some strengthening is possible on Friday and Saturday.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 205 miles (335 km) to the east of the center.

On the other hand, the estimated minimum central pressure is 1004 mb (29.65 inches).

Based on the forecast, Philippe still has an elongated circulation with discrete clusters of deep convection extending well to the east and south of the center.

When it comes to the amount of rainfall, rains will begin to affect Bermuda on Thursday with rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches expected through Friday.

Officials warned that these rainfall amounts could result in scattered flash floods.

Moreover, the rainfall across the United States and British Virgin Islands as well as in Puerto Rico will continue to diminish during the next few hours.

Tropical storm conditions are possible on Bermuda beginning Friday morning.

The swells generated by Philippe will affect portions of the Atlantic coasts of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico for another day or so.

So far, authorities noted that large swells are already affecting Bermuda from another weather system but it will begin to rise further on Thursday as Philippe approaches the island.

These conditions are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents and residents have been advised to coordinate with their local weather offices.

Amid the foreseen rainfall and wind system, officials said that the forecast for Philippe's intensity and structure remains complex.

However, regardless of Philippe's intensity or structure, the impacts in the affected areas mentioned should still be monitored amid the storm's progress and that affected residents should be prepared for the possibility of strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, Philippe is also seen to most likely head near the Maine and New Brunswick border late Saturday night to Sunday morning.

In this movement, Philippe will possibly pass near the southwestern tip of Nova Scotia.

Meteorologists warned that there is a chance that steering winds could direct Philippe towards eastern New England, allowing the system to merge with a non-tropical system and a cold front.

If this will occur, rains could hit New England.
