Dangerous Fire Conditions in Most of Georgia Prompts Red Flag Warning

Today, hazardous fire conditions are anticipated over parts of north and central Georgia.

Weather officials point out that with low relative humidities and gusty winds prevailing over most of the state, locals should be mindful of using open flames today.

Red Flag Warning in Most of Georgia

Parts of North Georgia and the state's central region are under a Red Flag Warning, which extends to the Oconee National Forest, starting at noon today and lasting until 8 PM EDT.

A Red Flag Warning for dry, gusty winds has been issued by the Peachtree City National Weather Service and is in effect until 8 PM EDT this evening. The relative humidity readings are at or below 25%.

Winds will blow towards the West at 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 35 to 40 mph, while the minimum relative humidity values are from 20% to 25%.

According to the National Weather Service, due to low humidity and high winds in addition to the dry fuels, any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Officials have reminded the public that outdoor burning is not recommended.

A Red Flag Warning denotes the occurrence of critical fire weather conditions now or within the next 24 hours.

The weather officials also reminded the public to refer to the local burn permitting authorities if they wish to burn outdoors.

A Wind Advisory is in effect over portions of central, east central, north central, northeast, northwest, southeast, and west central Georgia. This advisory will also expire by 8 PM EDT. West winds of up to 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph are expected. Tree limbs and unprotected objects could be blown around by strong winds, which could also cause a few power outages, weather officials warned.
