California National Guards Going Door-To-Door Digging Out Homes From Several Feet of Snow

The San Bernardino County residents who were trapped inside their homes after several feet of snow covered the area have been helped by the California National Guard as they go door to door digging pathways.

In California, there was a brief respite from the wintry weather to end the workweek, but another bout of significant snowfall descended over the weekend.

Through Tuesday, the Siskiyous and Sierra Nevada mountain ranges may receive several more feet of snowfall.

New Weather System: Snow and Flood

A whole other storm system that will move across the US this week is being monitored by the FOX Forecast Center. It will bring back the threat of dangerous flooding to the South while preparing the Upper Midwest and northern Plains for the possibility of heavy snowfall that could have a major impact on travel.

The lower Mississippi Valley and southern Plains will be under a flood threat starting on Tuesday, but the likelihood of dangerous flooding will increase on Wednesday and Thursday, FOX News reports.

Weary Weekend, Los Angeles

Those living in the mountains east of Los Angeles were pleading for assistance on Saturday as they continued to be trapped by a record amount of snowfall.

The historic blizzard dumped up to 7 feet of snow on parts of California last weekend, but about seven days later, crews are still having trouble clearing mountain roads, and rescuers are having trouble reaching stranded citizens.

USA Today reported residents feared they might never get out of the several feet of snow.

The region was engulfed in 10-foot walls of snow, which are proving challenging for plows to remove.

Still, Shannon Dicus, the Sheriff for San Bernardino County assured the citizens that their team will dig out the residents and that they are making tremendous progress in a tweet Friday Morning. He added that there are snowplows that will be used in the process.

Troubled Travel Conditions

In response to the winter storms, Senators from California asked President Biden to declare a federal disaster but the White House has yet to take any action on their request as of Saturday.

Only 61% of the area's roads were clear on Saturday, according to a snow removal map the county put online so residents could monitor progress.

After being thwarted the previous day, measures to deliver relief supplies including food by helicopter resumed on Saturday, the San Bernadino Sun reports.

A nonprofit volunteer organization that was set up by locals runs flights to transport food, water, and infant formula to the snow-bound area. Four deliveries were made on Friday before the mission was called off when one of the helicopters attempted to land in a supermarket parking lot but had to abort the attempt due to the large number of people waiting to receive supplies and the fact that private aircraft aren't allowed to land in disaster areas, NY Post reports.

Multiple Weather Alerts in California

According to the National Weather Service, there are multiple weather alerts in effect over California right now, with the majority being Winter Weather Advisories and Warnings that would not yet expire for another two days. Avalanche Warnings are issued over areas including the Eastern Sierra Slopes of Inyo County, Mono, and the Greater Lake Tahoe Area.
