Southern California braced for a possible dangerous winter storm this weekend that could unleash heavy snow, blizzard-like conditions and freezing rain.

Motorists traveling this week should consider the winter storm conditions, as travel hazards could emerge while on the roads.

Recently, Associated Press (AP) reported that parts of California received more snow and rain in January, reducing the state's prolonged drought conditions.

Meanwhile, the snow and rain this week would benefit California's drought-stricken areas.

There are only a few days before the calendar flips to March. The end of February would be chaotic for Californians as a severe winter storm could disrupt outdoor activities and travel this week.

According to AccuWeather's latest forecast, the winter storm is expected on Friday or this weekend.

Weather agencies have been monitoring the threat of coast-to-coast winter systems in the Western United States and Southern California.

The weather forecasts warned of hazardous winter storms that could unload heavy rain and snow this week.

Based on AccuWeather's outlook, the storm system is expected to cause damaging winds, low snow levels and wintry conditions.

  • Rain is forecast in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
  • Snow conditions are expected to unload in Medford, Reno and parts of Las Vegas.
  • In Portland, Oregon, Nature World News reported that the residents experienced the heaviest snowfall this week, causing widespread travel disruptions on main roads.
  • Blizzard warnings are also present in Pine Mountain Club and Santa Clarita.

On the other hand, the National Weather Prediction Center reported that significant mountain snow would unleash this weekend.

The advisory warned of blowing dust and snow due to unfavorable wind conditions.

Homeowners should secure their outdoor equipment and items due to the possibility of blizzard-like conditions this week.

In addition, the report noted that the weather conditions could lead to widespread power outages in Southern California.

Flooding concerns in California

Moreover, the National Weather Service (NWS) explained that heavy rain could unload in Southern California this week.

Flooding is also possible, especially in flood-prone areas.

Meanwhile, Americans near the coast should observe for high surf, rip currents and the rapid rise of seawater.

AccuWeather added that the rain conditions could persist until Saturday. Due to the rain advisory, commuters should consider bringing an umbrella or raincoat protection.

Winter storm safety concerns

Weather forecasts said that power lines would be affected this week.

Winter safety is essential, especially during the onset of severe weather conditions.

Power outages can also worsen the situation, making it more difficult for Californians to deal with the extreme cold.

As a result, preparing an emergency kit is crucial.

The American Red Cross and CDC explained the vital contribution of emergency bags during extreme disasters.

As mentioned in previous reports, emergency kits should include the following:

  • Small and portable battery-powered radio
  • Flashlight, rechargeable and battery-operated
  • Extra power banks and batteries
  • Blankets
  • Medicines
