Eastern US Storm Threat: Heavy Snow Expected from Ohio Valley to New England, Tornadoes Possible Across the Southeast

A winter storm system has blanketed the Eastern United States, as it navigates to the northeastern part of the nation, bringing multiple weather hazards.

Disruption to travel and daily activities are expected across the region in the coming hours and days.

A powerful winter storm struck over a dozen states with heavy snowfall, damaging winds, and rain.

It is also the same system that unleashed tornadoes in the Gulf Coast, knocking out power across some areas of Arkansas, Missouri, and Texas, according to a video report of CBS News.

Over a half foot of snow has already blanketed the region in more than 900-mile stretch from Oklahoma to Michigan, more snow is expected to continue on Wednesday evening, January 25, in upstate New York and northern New England, CBS News says.

This comes as the intense storm system has pummeled the Midwest and Northeast US.

The National Weather Service (NWS) - Weather Prediction Center (WPC) on Wednesday early morning initially forecasted that the developing storm will have widespread impacts across vast portions east of the Mississippi River.

This comes as a more tranquil weather will tap on the western half the country.

The winter storm is caused by a low-pressure system from the Gulf states and into the Tennessee Valley was expected to further dive deep into the Eastern Seaboard with a trajectory to reach the Northeast by Thursday, January 26, according to the NWS - WPC.

The NWS previously stated the winter storm threat will be multi-faceted and will have significant impacts from the Gulf coast into the Northeast.

Winter Storm Warnings

Earlier this week, weather forecast updates said that the NWS issued winter storm warnings in over a half dozen states in parts of the Northeast, where tens of thousands of people experienced power outages.

The winter storm alerts were given as 12 inches of snow has been reported in some areas.

During the previous forecast, NWS Meteorologist Alyssa Clements told USA Today that the US has two storm systems that will impact the country this week.

The first storm system organized over the Southwest US on Monday, January 23, before become a massive winter storm system and navigated its way into the southern Great Plains on Tuesday, January 24.

The same system was initially expected to hit parts of the southern, central, and eastern US by mid-week with multiple weather hazards like snow and severe thunderstorms with torrential rain.

Meanwhile, the ongoing winter storm system traversing the Northeast will last until Monday night, January 30 across the region, affecting New England in areas from New York to Maine.

In Massachusetts and New Hampshire, power outages were reported in over 45,700 homes and businesses by early Monday when the winter storm first arrived to New England.

New Hampshire experienced over 33,358 power outages, according to Eversource's outage map, as cited by USA Today.
