Residents and nearby communities should stay updated with the weather, especially since the winter storm could cause significant travel disruptions and slowed commutes.

The early week of January for many residents in the affected areas should be problematic as the winter conditions could unload heavy rain, significant freezing rain and ice conditions.

While portions of California suffered from heavy rain, Northern Plains and Upper Midwest could set records for colder temperatures.

Heavy snow

AccuWeather's latest forecast showed that the weather conditions in the Upper Midwest and Northern Plains could cause winter storm warnings.

According to AccuWeather's outlook, the weather showed that an ice storm could potentially emerge.

Winter warnings are present in Minneapolis, Sioux Falls, North Platte and Aspen. Meanwhile, winter weather advisories are also in portions of Pierre and Denver.

Residents in the affected areas should observe the heavy snow, causing inches of snow this week.

The National Weather Service explained that intense snow rates could unfold that could cause a significant power outage.

Furthermore, the weather report said that the heaviest snow could unload in Nebraska and South Dakota.

Due to the weather conditions, the weather could result in significant travel disruptions and delays.

Motorists should anticipate that the roads could lead to reduced visibility and slippery conditions.

Travel delays and slowed commutes

According to the report, travel delays could be expected in interstates 29, 35, 80, 90 and 94 until Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service reported that multi-hazard storms could be the main concern in the Central Plains, North Plains and Upper Midwest.

On Tuesday, AccuWeather said that the freezing rain and ice threat could emerge.

The forecast said the ice conditions could result in slippery slots and localized power outages, affecting portions of Sioux Falls, Omaha and Minneapolis.

Residents are advised to monitor the weather conditions.

The winter storm could be extremely dangerous. The first week of January could expect more travel as many return to work.

According to NWS Sioux Falls, travel could be dangerous. Vehicles could be stranded or suffer from being long-delayed in the middle of the roadways.

Vehicles must equip with winter-ready kits or supplies.

NWS Sioux Falls recommends the following emergency kits:

  • Battery-powered radio
  • First Aid Kit
  • Food supplies with bottled water
  • Extra Winter clothes
  • Shover and Ice Scraper
  • Powerbank or extra phone battery
  • Flashlight and batteries

Meanwhile, homeowners should also look into their home's pipes, especially because extremely cold weather could cause frozen pipes.

People traveling should consider the current weather conditions, especially the travel disruptions and delays.

Allotting extra time would be recommendable on the road.

On the other hand, prolonged exposure to colder weather could lead to hypothermia and frostbite.

You must regularly check the temperatures of your family members, especially those who could be the most vulnerable.
