Severe storms wreaking havoc through parts of Texas on Monday had caused extensive damage to multiple states. An hour earlier Tuesday, the National Weather Service Forth Worth survey team confirms 16 tornadoes had touched down in Texas, including an EF3 in Jacksboro.

The 'deadly' tornado impacted the Sherwood Shores community in far northern Grayson County, north of Dallas, as an EF2 twister with maximum wind speeds of 130 mph, AccuWeather reported. A 73-year-old Texas woman was killed in Monday's tornado outbreak and roughly two dozen were injured, according to local news network NBC DFW.

The 'significant' tornado impacted Jacksboro, Texas and caused extensive damage to the local high school, among other buildings. According to NWS, the same tornado continued into Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Alabama.

Tornado Watch in effect

Another twister was confirmed on the southern United States, this time in Alabama Tuesday night. The western Alabama city listed Alabama as one of the tornado-afflicted states, after a tornado on the ground was indicated by radar near the small town of Eutaw, Alabama.

Another tornado damage was reported about 70 miles south down the western border of Alabama, Choctaw County. One resident called the earlier storm that hit the county a "total devastation" in the town of Lisman. Moreover, much of Shelby county was under a flash flood warning late Tuesday.

A total of 11 tornadoes have already been confirmed in Texas, including New Orleans, the city's Lower Ninth Ward neighborhood.

Destructive tornado through New Orleans

A tornado touched down in the New Orleans and killed one person, damaged homes, knocked out power and prompted a search for possibly trapped residents, the New York Times quoted local authorities. It hit both the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans and St. Bernard Parish, the same communities devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

"We don't know how many and we don't know the severity of the injuries at this time," St. Bernard Parish president, Guy McInnis, said in an interview, adding that the city is currently focusing on search and rescue efforts.

The NWS confirmed shortly after issuing tornado warnings for several counties in central Alabama that a tornado had crossed into Shelby County, near Cahaba River Park, about 10 miles southeast of Birmingham. Meanwhile, the physical damage in New Orleans is still currently being assessed.

According to the Tornado Archive, New Orleans is no stranger to tornadoes, with 7 significant (EF2 or stronger) twisters crisscrossing the metro area since 1950. The most recent large tornado (an EF3) last struck New Orleans in February 2017. The NWS estimates winds had reached up to 150 miles per hour - damaged more than 600 homes and injured 33 people.

Several tornado warnings issued in Mississippi fortunately did not generate much significant damage. A flood watch was being stretched from eastern Texas up through the western edge of Tennessee, while wind advisory covered nearly all of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi, as well as parts of Arkansas and Tennessee. Louisiana residents are warned about the possibility of tornadoes sweeping through the region.

Meteorologists said that the severe weather system is forecast to be less widespread and less intense by the time it moves over the Eastern United States on Wednesday.
