A recent study published in Environmental Science & Technology (ACS EST) shows that electric vehicles are having a positive impact on air quality in the Bay Area.

The study, which used a network of sensors called BEACO2N to monitor carbon dioxide (CO2) levels, found that emissions have been decreasing steadily since 2018. This decrease is mainly due to a reduction in on-road emissions from passenger vehicles.

The BEACO2N network was created by Ronald Cohen, a UC Berkeley professor of chemistry.The network consists of over 80 inexpensive sensors located around the San Francisco Bay Area.

These sensors are designed to measure not only CO2 but also five other critical air pollutants: carbon monoxide, nitrous oxides (NO and NO2), ozone and particulates (PM2.5).

This comprehensive monitoring system provides researchers with a wealth of data on air quality in the Bay Area.
