Windy conditions may seem common, especially in some states of America, but these can cause hassle and several road accidents. Extreme winds are often accompanied by snowstorms or rain. Avoid driving on days with strong winds or places that are expected to be the strongest. If not possible, here are five tips to drive better and stay safe even on windy days.

1) Stay updated about the weather conditions and forecasts:

It is essential to stay updated with the weather predictions, warnings, watches, and advice using the car radio or a weather updates app. This can help you better plan your journey and know what to expect on the road. You can even try to avoid the areas that are most expected to be affected by the strong winds, such as bridges and flyovers, hilly areas, straight and open roads, etc.

2) Maintain a safe distance:

Driving cautiously and keeping a safe distance from other vehicles is necessary when driving every day, but it becomes crucial on windy days. Keeping a safe distance from other vehicles provides you and the other drivers on the road with adequate response time to avoid any debris or objects due to the strong winds, such as a fallen tree or billboard.  Also, keep your car lights on high beams to see clearly despite the sand or snow that the strong winds carry with them.

3) Be cautious of heavy loaded or huge vehicles:

Heavily loaded vehicles are more prone to losing balance and skidding on strong windy days, such as large trucks, tow trucks, buses, etc. When driving on a windy day, the driver should be extra cautious of these vehicles as they are more likely to lose balance and lead to severe accidents.

4) Reduce your driving speed:

One of the best safety protocols you can follow on a windy day is to drive slower than usual and below the standard speed limit. This will allow you to handle your car better in case of a strong gust of wind, and winds are less effective on slow-driving vehicles than vehicles driving at a fast speed.

5) Keep a sturdy grip on the steering wheel:

You must maintain a firm and sturdy grip on your car's steering wheel to ensure that your vehicle does not lose balance and skid off due to strong winds. This will enable you to have balanced control over your car even in the windiest conditions. If you feel tired and think you won't maintain a firm grip, it is better to pull over and take a break from driving.
