It's clear to see that dentistry, much like all medicine, has greatly developed and improved. Nevertheless, many people are ignorant of the unbelievable advances that have occurred in the last 10 years. There have been significant advancements in technology that added to the friendly and inviting ambiance of the rooms to mitigate the fears that patients tend to have about dentists. Dentistry has developed to become more and more patient-focused with regard to both comfort and convenience.

These improvements save you time and money later on, and also show that dentists are able to render more accurate analyses and concentrate on preventative care rather than constantly responding to issues.  Additionally, all the technological advancements result in faster and more efficient services such as same-day crowns, implant-supported dentures, and tooth alignment.

We spoke with a Cambridge dentist Dr. Hashimi who outlined a few areas of improvement in dentistry.

Dentistry is now more about preventative care. Previously, it was up to the dentist to recognize and correct issues once they already occurred. However, this has changed. Now, with the improvement in technology and greater knowledge of what creates issues in your oral health. This makes your dentist is adequately equipped to give preventative rather than restorative care.

There are many tools for preventative care. These tools are great for the teeth if used properly, but what are smart toothbrushes, and how do they work? There are sensors in the head of the brush that allows you to send information to an app on your smartphone. You can record how long you brushed for, how much pressure you applied, and even the type of angle you were holding your toothbrush. Not only that but, these interactive apps have games and awards to inspire children to brush regularly.

You can now look for cavities with lasers because they have invented a way for the diode laser, which is able to identify a weakness or a cavity in the tooth.  Equipped with this type of technology, your dentist can watch the teeth, examine the way it is doing at your next visit, and take the required action early on.

You can now have same-day crowns. Two of the most notable innovations that dentistry has had in recent years are computer-assisted design (CAD), and computer-assisted manufacture (CAM), technologies. These tools allow dentists to use technology for procedures like bridges and crowns. This means that a crown can be created and applied in one day, as opposed to waiting for it to be sent to a dental laboratory in previous years.

You can now do anesthesia without needles. Perhaps anesthesia with a needle is no problem for you, but many people still have needle issues. Today, many dentists use electronic anesthesia, which doesn't leave you slurring your words or accidentally biting your tongue. While this is still fairly new, it is just one of the many ways dentists are doing their best to make your visit as stress-free as possible.

There is now the benefit of 3D digital imaging which is another exciting development in dentistry. This great technology helps dentists to not only see your teeth, but also to pick up any issues with your tissue, muscle, bone, and nerves. As well as this, the accuracy of 3D digital imaging enables the dentist to be a more accurate diagnosis which saves you a lot of stress and money in the long run.

Dentists are now able to detect issues like cavities and signs of decay because of Digital dental x-rays. They can also look at teeth progression as well as bone have in children and provide early diagnosis of abnormalities. It's also useful to be able to spot cysts, abscesses, and even tumors that have the potential to cause injury or pain. Digital imaging can also solve problems. For example with root canal treatments, dental implants, oral surgery procedures, gum disease treatments, and much more.

There is a better dentist's environment. You no longer have to wait until you get into the dentist's chair to be able to see how much the profession has evolved over the years. You can notice it from the moment you walk through the front door. You will most probably see a more welcoming ambiance with a center on comfort and care. Not only that but pediatric dentists often have fun games and an assortment of toys for children to enjoy. Some may also employ the services of therapy animals to ensure that your children are excited about the visit.

Final words

Over the last 10 years, Dentistry has most certainly changed for the better, which means you don't have any more excuses to not make an appointment. You should schedule an appointment with your dentist at least every three months to maintain your teeth.
