Is doomsday coming? Conspiracy theorists claim that the end of the world is near as reported warning against potential asteroid impact surfaced.

It is said that there are nearly 1,000 asteroids traveling near Earth at 60,000 miles per hour. Some of these space rocks may head towards the Earth, according to a report. NASA already identified some near-Earth asteroids, but conspiracy theorists claim that more are waiting to be discovered in the next few years.

NASA recently launched to space its OSIRIS-REx, the first mission to conduct a comprehensive surface mapping of asteroid Bennu. The mission is also tasked to collect samples from the asteroid using the spacecraft's robotic arm. The collected samples will be brought back to Earth.

According to NASA, the mission will provide information about asteroids, one of the oldest space rocks, which may help man's understanding of how the universe and the planet formed. Aside from that, understanding the composition of an asteroid might also help experts to improve their ability to predict future impact from space rocks.

"Astronauts will return to Earth with far more samples than have ever been available for study, which could open new scientific discoveries about the formation of our solar system and beginning of life on Earth," a NASA official said in a statement.

However, conspiracy theorists see NASA's effort to study an asteroid as a preparation for the end of the world prophecy. Some people say that NASA launched this mission to lessen the potential effect of an asteroid impact in the near future. The goal is to conduct a re-orbit to change the path of "perilous" asteroids away from the Earth.

Conspiracy theorists based their claims on a biblical passage that mentions the end of the world. "A huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turns into blood, a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ship's were destroyed," according to the Book of Revelation.

To further support this claim, a Chinese astronomer said that an asteroid called 2009ES will hit the planet soon. The killer asteroid, which is about 10-mile wide, is said to be as powerful as three billion nuclear bombs, according to the Morning Ledger.

But as for NASA scientists, most of their missions are geared towards the benefit of mankind including OSIRIS-REx that will help prevent the future devastating effect of asteroid and space rocks impacts.
