Persil has revamped its washing detergent product and stopped producing its plastic dosing ball while replacing its bottles and making them 100% recyclable.

This piece of plastic is a dosing ball shaped like a small bowl that detaches from the detergent's main bottle. The ball had been a hot issue being protested by environmental activists on social media platforms, citing that it is another massive addition to landfill wastes. 

Previously, each new bottle of the Persil washing detergent had one of the dosing balls included with it, even if those who are arguing against it are saying that each household or user only needs one dosing ball

Ditching the Ball and Turning Recyclable

According to Persil, it will now remove the plastic dosing ball from the new detergent bottles it will release. By Persil's estimates, the new containers without these balls will save about 1,000 tons of plastic waste per year. And if a consumer wants to have a dosing ball, it is possible to order it online. 

Also, Persil will now start using biodegradable bottles with its washing detergent, which are now made of 100 percent recyclable plastic. These new bottles are produced from recycled post-consumer plastic.

Plus, the size of the new bottles is now made smaller, because the product is now more concentrated. This reduces the transport costs and wastes from transporting the products, which, by the estimates of Unilever, amounts to 19% savings. Unilever is Persil's parent company. 

New Liquid Ingredients

But the improvements do not stop there. Persil has also included fresh ingredients in its liquid detergent that are environmentally friendly. The product now has stain removers that are plant-based. Persil also uses biodegradable ingredients that are sourced from sustainable supplies.

Unilever's Clean Future Program

These environmental "wins," as unveiled by The Grocer, a trade journal, are among the changes being made by Unilever as part of its worldwide billion-dollar program which it calls "Clean Future."

Many consumer corporations want to increase their green environmental credentials due to the public's increasing awareness of environmental issues and the growing concerns on waste, particularly plastics.

According to Charlie Beevor, Unilever UK home care vice president, Unilever's "Clean Future" program is the company's vision for transforming and making sustainable laundry and cleaning brands. They started this process with their Persil brand. 

Beevor says that the laundry and cleaning industry must become free from its dependence on harmful fossil fuels. Unilever, he says, is proud to lead in this advocacy.

He adds that Unilever knows that consumers want products with good value that still deliver top performance while also being sustainable. Beevor says that Unilever does not believe that consumers have to compromise between getting quality products and saving Mother Earth.

With its new and improved Persil washing detergent, Unilever is only starting the revolution of producing quality products that are effective as well as kind to our earthly home. Revamping the Persil washing detergent by doing away with its dosing ball is a massive move towards this end.
