Researchers at University of Hawaii-Manoa and the University of Tokyo have found, to their surprise, that two types of deep-sea sharks have positive buoyancy – they float even when not moving – unlike most other sharks.
Well, not quite. But new remarkable research has shown that in the longest ever tiger tracking study, these predators boast migration patterns more similar to birds, turtles and some marine mammals than other fishes.
With flashbacks to Jaws in mind, it seems like an insane idea to leave the safety of a diving cage with a massive great white shark swimming just a few feet away. And yet that's exactly what one lucky diver did near Guadalupe Island in Mexico.
The fossilized remains of a gigantic, 20-foot shark - the size of a two-story building and over 100 million years old - have been unearthed in Texas.
Here's something you probably didn't know. Sharks, skates, and rays - everyday Chondrichthyes - boast some very strange sexual organs. Like a pair of clasper-like penises, the male sex organs of a shark literally hook inside a female shark's cloaca in a unique reproductive strategy. Now, researchers think they have finally determined how these animals developed such strange members.
It's not very often that you lump a kangaroo and a shark into the same sentence, and yet that's exactly what comes to mind when talking about the rare, cute pocket shark that was discovered deep in the Gulf of Mexico.
Florida state is a bit infamous for the crazy things its people do, but what about its wildlife? One lucky photographer recently caught a local bobcat fishing for shark on a local beach. Now people are no-doubt wondering, "is that normal?!"

A massive great white shark was spotted swimming off the coast of Florida this past week, making its way farther and farther south. The shark, dubbed "Katherine," is one of several dozen sharks currently being tracked by the OCEARCH research team. OCEARCH said this year has been a "slow" shark year.
After all the excitement over the recent catch and release of the goblin shark caught in the Gulf of Mexico, fisherman off the coast of Japan nabbed a rare megamouth shark recently.
A new study suggests that endangered species are used in shark fin soup.
At least 79 new species of sharks have been discovered by the scientists in South Carolina. Researchers at the Hollings Marine Laboratory at Fort Johnson on Charleston Harbor studied the DNA by allowing the genes to stick to the molecules. This way the researchers were able to compare the genetic coding of the 79 new species with that of the other species. They found that the newly discovered sharks are different from others and called them the "cryptic" species.
