Keeping safe from powerful quakes

While quakes are hard to predict, people can prepare for possible devastating damages and injuries.

Being prepared and knowing the early signs of quakes can save you from possible death. Here are essential earthquake safety reminders that you must remember:

Secure your home

  • Communities and homeowners should first secure their homes from possible damages and repairs. They should ensure that they observe the building's guidelines.
  • Checking your home position in major quake fault lines would be helpful to anticipate the quake impact.
  • Furthermore, homeowners should also consider securing all items or equipment that could fall during a quake.
  • The Earthquake County Alliance explained that moving objects into lower shelves or positions can be helpful to stay safe.

Drop, cover and hold on

  • Once the earthquake strikes and trembles, it is best to cover your head, drop and look for a secure or study table. Once you are under a safe table, hold on.
  • Homeowners should communicate with their family members about possible emergency plans or locations to evacuate.
  • Once the earthquake stops shaking, it is essential to stay alert and careful, as falling debris and damaged houses could fall.
  • Immediately contact your family members about your safety. If one member becomes missing, report it to authorities.

Keeping emergency kits at home

Homeowners should also consider earthquake insurance. Furthermore, keeping disaster emergency kits can be very helpful.

According to American Red Cross, homeowners should have enough week-long supplies, as power outages and stores can become closed.

Red Cross advisory noted the importance of the Go-Kit and Home-Kit supplies.

  • Go-Kit is a three-day supply that you can carry.
  • Home-Kit is a week-long supply at your home.
