TikTok User Captures Stunning Video of Dolphin Having a Conversation with a Kid in South Australia

Dolphins are known for being highly intelligent and social animals that can communicate with each other using a variety of sounds and gestures. But can they also talk to humans?

A viral video on TikTok suggested that they might be able to, as it shows a dolphin swimming up to a boy and allegedly "talking" to him.

The video, posted by @mischievously_wild, has received over 970,000 views and 102,000 likes at the time of writing.

It was filmed at O'Sullivan Beach Boat Ramp facility in Onkaparinga in South Australia, where a dolphin was spotted near the shore.

The video shows a boy running across some rocks towards the water's edge, where a dolphin's fin can be seen poking out of the water.

The boy said, "he was talking to me" as the dolphin swims away.

The original poster claimed that the dolphin was "separated from its mother and sick" and that it was "the first time ever seeing a baby dolphin."

The video has captivated many TikTok users, who commented on how amazing and cute the encounter was.

Some users also shared their own stories of interacting with dolphins or expressed their love for the marine mammals.

How Dolphins Communicate

Herzing and her team have developed a device called CHAT (Cetacean Hearing and Telemetry), which allows them to play synthetic sounds that represent objects or actions to the dolphins and record their responses.

The goal of the project is to create a shared vocabulary with the dolphins and engage them in natural conversations.

So far, the researchers have reported some promising results, such as dolphins responding appropriately to some sounds or initiating interactions with the device.

Another example is the Cetacean Point Project (CPP), led by Kathleen Dudzinski, who has been studying captive dolphins in Japan for over 17 years.

Dudzinski and her team have created a touch screen system that displays symbols that represent objects or actions to the dolphins and records their choices.

The aim of the project is to test the dolphins' cognitive abilities and preferences and explore their potential for symbolic communication.

The researchers have found that some dolphins can learn to associate symbols with objects or actions and use them to request items or activities.

These projects suggested that dolphins have some capacity for learning artificial languages or symbols and interacting with humans using them.

However, they do not prove that dolphins can talk to humans in a natural way or understand human language as we do.

More research is needed to fully understand how dolphins communicate and what they are trying to say.
