According to the latest research, bats and birds are crucial in conserving Northern Peru's endangered dry forests and cacao yield.

Animals, including plants and birds, show significance in the ecosystems regarding biocontrol benefits and improving harvests of tropical commodity crops, including cacao.

With the expensive management of crops from pests, researchers explained that birds and bats help to control potential pests, increasing the cacao yields in Northern Peru.

The research was published in Ecological Applications. The report was also available to read on Phys.org's website.

Reports showed that El Niño developed and is expected to impact global weather patterns and strengthen in 2024 significantly, bringing warmer temperatures.

Animals play a valuable role in the environment because they can increase the yield of crops and harvests.

In forests, birds could become helpful in sowing seeds that could help grow more trees.

According to the National Audubon Society, birds are essential in the environment, helping to pollinate fruits. It allows forests to remain healthy, ensuring they eat pests that could harm crops.

In the latest report published in Ecological Applications, the quantity and quality of harvested fruits and cacao are because of the role of birds and bats in preventing leaf damage.

The report noted that cacao yields could likely become affected due to pests, low pollination and diseases.

Furthermore, the significant productivity of cacao could help farmers in Northern Peru, with people helping to grow cacao.

According to the report, the variety of cacao found in Northern Peru is called Blanco de Piura.

The said cacao produces delicious chocolates.

The research highlighted the contribution of agroforestry to the cacao industry, adding to the difficulty of growing cacao.

With CGIAR's Nature-Positive Solutions Initiative or NATURE+, the researchers explained that cacao practitioners explained the importance of creatures like birds and bats.

The Alliance of Bioversity International and expert Carolina Ocampo - Ariza monitored and looked into the role of birds and bats in farmers' harvests.

The researchers explained that birds and bats are likely to consume mealy bugs and aphids, adding that the report added 54% cacao productivity with the bat and birds in the area.

Other benefits of birds in the environment

However, the researchers said that intraguild interactions could be crucial, adding that biocontrol could be affected.

The study noted that pest control could weaken as top predators (birds and bats) could likely eat spiders and ants.

Spiders and ants also play a valuable role in the environment that could also impact biocontrol and pest control.

As cacao is considered a main source of living for small farmers and communities, protecting their yields or harvests is crucial for their living and environment.

In other reports, the National Audubon Society explained that the construction of Avian could become helpful in the creation of a new habitat.

Birds could not only help with the cacao industry, but it helps with animal sanitation.
