Mississippi Braces for Colder Weather Prompted by Record-low Temperature

Several parts of Mississippi will be colder than Alaska on Sunday due to an extremely significant jet stream drop. The Southeast is expected to experience record-breaking low temperatures as a result of the recent severe weather that has been plaguing the region.

Cold Air to Worsen Snowfall in Some Regions

According to AccuWeather, severe weather is expected to sweep through the Southeast late Friday night into early Saturday morning. Flooding, hail, and even tornadoes will soon be a thing of the past.

Throughout the second half of the week, a cold front swept across much of the United States, breaking temperature records from Washington State to Oklahoma. On Wednesday, Olympia, Washington, and Seattle tied record daily low temperatures for the day. 

Temperatures in Oregon and Idaho broke daily records as the cold air moved east. As of Thursday, the temperature in Laramie, Wyoming had fallen to 20 degrees Fahrenheit below zero, beating the previous record by 5 degrees. Denver, Colorado, set a new record low for an early morning low temperature of 7 degrees below zero on Thursday. 

According to a Senior Meteorologist Rob Miller of AccuWeather, when it comes to the Southeast, cold air from Canada and the US Plains is currently making its way south. As a result of this cold air, the snow expected from Colorado and New Mexico through the Great Lakes is being fueled by it.

Arctic conditions are expected to increase on Friday across the northern Plains, resulting in temperatures in Minneapolis that are 25 degrees below average for the time of year. Texas will be the first to feel the biting cold before the eastern plains as a whole. 

On Saturday, the cold will spread over the eastern United States, causing temperatures in cities like Nashville and Pittsburgh to plunge by 30 to 40 degrees in only one day. By Saturday afternoon, temperatures will have dropped at least 20 degrees in New York and Florida, respectively.

Cities Expected to Break Record-low Temperatures  

Saturday's high temperatures across the Southeast are expected to fall below the region's average low temperature, including Atlanta, Nashville, and Birmingham.

Late-season cold air is dipping so far south because of an unusually significant dip in the jet stream. The Southeast will experience considerably lower temperatures on Saturday night and Sunday morning as a result of the odd jet stream configuration. 

On Sunday, the low temperature in Bryson City, North Carolina, is projected to fall by more than ten degrees, to 11 degrees. On March 13, 2000, Bryson City had a record low temperature of 22 degrees.

Many more locations, such as Knoxville and Mobile in Alabama, are expected to see record-breaking low temperatures by Sunday morning, as per Zenger.

Even Florida's Jacksonville, which is expected to reach a low of 30 degrees, may see temperatures below freezing. 

Temperatures are expected to fall to 20 degrees early Sunday morning in Tupelo, Mississippi, which might set a new record low for the city. On Sunday morning, Tupelo, Mississippi, would be 20 degrees cooler than Anchorage, Alaska.

On Sunday morning, temperatures in Anchorage are anticipated to drop to a slightly above-average 23 degrees. 

Low Temperatures May Prompt Freezing and Frost Concerns

These freezing and frosty conditions in the Southeast are possible because of the current low temperatures. Frost and freeze warnings expand into central Florida Sunday morning, which could have a negative impact on the state's citrus industry. It's a given that anyone who owns plants or has a garden will take care to keep them safe.

Miller, on the other hand, predicts that the cold spell will only linger until Monday, when temperatures should return to normal. Some cities that saw record low temperatures on Sunday will see temperatures spike during the next 24 hours. 

From Sunday morning to Monday afternoon, the temperature in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, will rise by more than 40 degrees. The temperature is expected to fall to a low of 26 degrees on Sunday, before rising to 69 degrees on Monday. 

By Monday, the cold shot is going to be a brief one, with very low temperatures Saturday night into Sunday morning, then the Sunday afternoon temps should be a good 10-15 degrees warmer, and already closer to average by Monday," Miller predicted.
