Yuga Seasons

We all know the seasons winter, spring, summer and autumn and even have our own favourites that we love when it comes around. But did you know that there are actual seasons that measure the cycle of the universe and how it repeats itself?

The four yuga seasons

There are four yuga seasons that have been predicted by the Puranas from ancient India and play a role in how our planet works. Just like the vicious cycle of life, there is a cycle for the universe that goes as: the universe being created, then destroyed and then created again. It's a never ending cycle and the yuga seasons play a time unit on how the cosmos work.

The four seasons are Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dvapara Yuga and Kali Yuga. Each season has played a significant role for our planet and has historically shown what each period was like. It first originated in ancient India, but soon there was proof that it had also portrayed society as a whole.

The first season was the Satya Yuga, where the Vedic states that humans lived a long and healthy life, with unbelievable strength and a love for spirituality. This way of living lasted for 100,000 years. There were no divisions between cultures, but instead everyone was united as a whole. It stood for the complete opposite of what the world is seen as today, and humans had a state of mindfulness and calmness.

Things transitioned when people started changing their attitude towards spirituality and decided to express their opinions towards the demands for materialism. A form of hierarchy was also created, which is what eventually divided humans into different social classes.

Treta Yuga was the second season that still had a sense of spirituality, but instead it was sacrifices and rituals of creatures for the gods. It was believed that humans worshipped a superior being named Vishnu and there was a change between humans where they were more compassionate towards each other and had a strong form of morality. Again, humans lived up to 100,000 years before the season changed to the third season, Dvapara Yuga.

The third season consisted of wars and selfishness, as people started sacrificing everything around them for their own happiness. Different kingdoms were in battle with each other and all beliefs towards religions were abandoned.

What season are we in now?

We are currently in the beginning of Kali Yuga, which is a strong reputation of what society is like today. The predictions that were made in vedic literature actually portray the world we currently live in, with a great division in humankind, the importance of materialism and the sacrifices we make for it. There's also the lack of morality and the increase of selfishness and a constant global conflict where there is always war. As for spirituality, it has been abandoned and people have lost hope.

However, the prediction doesn't stop there. It is also said in the literature that as the season continues to progress, there will be a new evolution in the world that is only negative. Humans will form in packs and lose the structure of hierarchy as their value will drop lower than wild animals, men will have to fight and eat each other in order to survive and human civilization will be weaker than ever before.

Our say

It is important to pay attention to these four seasons and how they have evolved, because they too are part of the spiritual history and journey that portrays the way we live on this planet.
