Last month, Elon Musk revealed his Tesla Master Plan Part 2 that includes his intention of developing solar roofs.

Musk is developing affordable solar energy sources, like the solar roof to instigate the transition to renewable and sustainable energy.

In line with the master plan, Tesla just acquired SolarCity. The partnership will be responsible for developing "solar shingles" or the small solar panels that can easily be installed on homes in place of their usual roof.

To further execute Tesla's Master Plan Part 2, the SolarCity and Tesla merger was sealed in a $2.6 billion deal. Musk revealed that the solar roof would be integrated into homes.

"It's not a thing on a roof. It is the roof," Tesla's CEO Elon Musk said in a statement. "You don't want to put solar panels on top of a roof you're going to replace," Musk added.

For Musk, it is better to replace old roof materials with solar panels that can generate energy and at the same time, work as a roof for the home. Musk mentioned that roofs are replaced on a regular basis citing five million new roofs installed each year. The business tycoon suggested that instead of replacing old roofs with new ones made out of the same material, people can choose to install Tesla solar roofs instead.

Tesla is developing new ways to make sources of renewable energy more affordable to the general public and this is in line with Musk's campaign of eliminating the use of fossil fuels to generate energy.

This wasn't the first time the Musk insisted his preference for solar energy. In fact, it has always been included in his plans for Tesla and his other enterprises. Musk's dream is to make the shift to sustainable energy as soon as possible, thus creating and developing more technologies to do just that.
