A 65-year-old man was reportedly mauled to death by two donkeys on a farm in western Hungary, prompting a call for the animals to be put down.

Sandor Horvath, a retired Hungarian firefighter, was visiting a friend's farm near the village of Magyarszecsod last week when he was found dead on the premises.

Horvath, who used a mobility scooter to move around, was reportedly pulled from his vehicle and dragged for more than 150 feet. He was bitten, trampled on and mutilated by the pair of asses.

Investigators initially believed a pack of wolves attacked Horvath, but a postmortem inspection revealed the fatal injuries were delivered by donkeys, the New York Daily News reported, citing the Hungarian website the Bors.

Donkeys usually are not aggressive towards humans, but it is possible that the animals felt threatened by Horvath and were compelled to attack. Csikos Darda, the daughter of the farm owner, reportedly worried about how aggressive the donkeys had become, but her father dismissed her concerns.

"I had noticed that the donkeys were becoming increasingly aggressive and I'd asked my father to do something about it, but he'd said they were fine," she said, according to Sky News.

A local veterinarian said the donkeys "probably reacted like this as they thought the victim was intruding upon their territory."

Comparing them to violent dogs, a local police spokesman said the donkeys should be euthanized.

"We can't allow animals to go around killing people. Putting them to sleep is the best thing for everyone."
