A very strong earthquake hit southeastern Iran, causing damage to villages, injuries and killing at least two people early Saturday morning.

The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 6.0 with aftershocks as powerful as 5.6.

The quake was centered about 90km (56 miles) southeast of the Persian Gulf town of Minab in Hormozgan Province, 1,475km (917 miles) from the nation's capital Tehran. The Iranian Seismological Center reported the quake at magnitude 6.2 with a depth of 15 km (9.3 miles).

The quake was felt along the Strait of Hormuz, an important shipping lane. Across the strait in Dubai, people reported feeling the earthquake.

According to the independent news site Earthquake-Report, 58 villages are within 15 km radius of the epicenter and 10 of them have been destroyed. At least 20 injuries have been reported, according to Earthquake-Report.

The site reports two confirmed deaths, including a 13-month-old child.

Iran has been hit with a string of earthquakes in the last month, including 6.3-and 7.8 magnitude shockers that killed dozens, injured hundreds and destroyed thousands of homes in April.
